Health maintenance organization (HMO): A group of doctors, hospitals and healthcare providers who agree to care for patients for a set amount of money each month. In an HMO, you must access your care exclusively from HMO providers except for emergencies.

Health reimbursement arrangement (HRA): An employer-funded account used to reimburse employees for eligible medical expenses and is typically offered in combination with higher deductible health plans.

Health savings account (HSA): An account funded by the employer or employee that reimburses medical expenses tax-free, set up only in conjunction with high-deductible health insurance plans.

HIPAA letter: HIPAA stands for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996. The purpose of this letter is to provide proof of prior coverage for employees whose current coverage has ended.

Hired and nonowned auto liability: Coverage that protects a nonprofit for claims that result from the use of a vehicle not owned by the nonprofit but used on the nonprofit's behalf (for example, an employee's or volunteer's personal vehicle). Hired and nonowned coverage is excess over the insurance on the auto involved in the accident. The policy protects the named insured, not the driver of the vehicle. This coverage can be purchased as an add-on to the CGL policy, as an adjunct to the Business Auto Policy, as part of a Business Owners Policy, or as a separate policy.

Hold harmless agreement: Contract by which legal liability for damages of one party is assumed by the other party. One party agrees to hold the other party harmless (and usually indemnify) from the liabilities associated with the hazards of a particular activity or venture. Contracts may contain a hold harmless clause.

Home health: Services performed at an individual's home including a wide range of skilled and non-skilled services, including part-time nursing care, various types of therapy, and assistance with activities of daily living and homemaker services such as cleaning and meal preparation. For Medicare purposes, this term refers specifically to intermittent, physician-ordered medical services or treatment.

Hospice care: Care that addresses the physical, spiritual, emotional, psychological, financial and legal needs of the dying patient and the family; provided by an interdisciplinary team of professionals and perhaps volunteers in a variety of settings, including hospitals, freestanding facilities, and at home.
