Social Media - Friend or Foe
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Social Media - Friend or Foe?
These days everyone is logged in to at least one of these sites and if you want to reach them, you've got to log in too. But have you ever thought about the effect social media could have on your nonprofit organization?
Social media can have a positive impact on your organization. Posts have the ability to communicate the mission of an organization with a click of a button. They have the power to attract new employees, board members or volunteers and they can also solicit donations from near and far.
Unfortunately, there is also a downside to posts, "likes" and tweets. Federal and state level complaints stemming from social media actions are on the rise. Employees and volunteers have filed lawsuits claiming harassment and bullying from comments made on social networking sites. These types of comments and the subsequent activities can impact the workplace environment. Employers (including nonprofit employers) can easily be pulled into a lawsuit alleging harassment or workplace bullying.
In addition, social media sites reach out to customers and clients of nonprofits. Employees and volunteers can post comments about a customer or client on a nonprofit organization's Facebook or LinkedIn page. The customer or client can construe those comments as defamatory, harassing or discriminatory and they can take legal action against the nonprofit.
Similarly, an employee or volunteer may tweet or make a comment about a third party on their personal Facebook or LinkedIn page. If the comment can be tied back to the organization, the nonprofit can be named in a complaint or a lawsuit.
Does your nonprofit have the money, time and energy to defend itself in these situations? Would you want your organization's valuable resources to be spent on costly litigation from what may have been thought of as an innocent attempt at being current with social media trends?
Protect your organization, its mission and your employees and volunteers.
